BBC Films OKD around Brands Hatch - February 20th 2009

After contacting my local BBC station to get some publicity for the 50th birthday celebrations, BBC South-East today contacted me and told me they would like to film the car, and that they would hire out Brands Hatch to do it.

After an early 6.30am start, and having done all the normal preparation routines we go through each time the car goes out 'fully loaded', I was ready to accept guests.

At 9.30 camera crew and reporter turned up and we discussed how the day would go. Peter Wittlesea, the BBC reporter, conducted a couple of interviews, both in-car and out, and his assistant filmed some long shots from the tower on the pit straight. Click on the picture below for some archive and very rare Police Mini footage.

I had decided that it would be a bit novel to 'pursue' and overtake another Cooper - so Chris was on hand to act as the villian in his 69 Cooper. We took some initial footage at the house, with the car emerging from the garage to form the opening shots, and then went on to Brands. The reporter agreed that it would be good to do it, and Motorsport Vision, the Jonathan Palmer led concern at the track, said it would be fine with the proviso that we didn't exceed 30mph. We got that raised to 50mph after he saw one old boy and one more sprightly chap coming up to the reception and figured they couldn't possibly be irresponsible enough to flout the rules. Us? The very thought. On 3.5" wheels?

The finished item went out at 6.50pm that night, and a DVD of the film is available if you contact me on the links page.

And jolly good it is too.
